Musicians who frequent Brandt's
Bottoms Up
Blues Gang

"There
is a warmth that generates from the stage and makes the
listener feel enveloped in the proceedings; participation is
not an option. A lot of this comes from Kari Liston. As a
front "man," she is the perfect object of
attention and affections. She comes across as that big

"her voice gently grabs
your soul and leads it someplace where inhibitions melt and
smiles are currency....she hits notes tenaciously enough to karate chop through
oak and emits chords tender enough to lull a newborn baby." Debra D. Bass,
St. Louis Post Dispatch 4/11/07
At Kim's performance you can jazz
style it with Norah Jones, "Don't Know Why I didn't
Call", Diva dish It with "Better Than Love"
or go to church with her in "just a Closer Walk with
thee". Kim serves up a platter of Jazz and blues
desserts with sweet, sassy, and soulful sounds!

Rough
Grooves

Get ready to groove!
RFT's Best Of 2008 - Best Blues Artist
www.myspace.com/roughgrooves
Some say St. Louis has more
working blues musicians than any other city in the USA.
Others in places like Chicago or Austin might find such a
claim statistically suspect, but there's no question the
Gateway City has a wealth of blues talent on display every
weekend in local clubs. With elder statesmen such as Henry
Townsend, Johnnie Johnson, Oliver Sain and Bennie Smith
having passed on in recent years, the spotlight now falls
on the generation of mid-career musicians who are carrying
on the St. Louis blues tradition, as exemplified by the
band Rough Grooves. Guitarist Rich McDonough is considered
one of the top players in town, and singer and harmonica
player Eric McSpadden is equally esteemed for his
authentic yet contemporary approach to the blues. Bassist
and singer Sharon Foehner and drummer Joe Pastor, both
bandleaders in their own right, add additional dimensions
to the music while also providing solid support.

Hot
Club Caravan

Hot
Club Caravan is wowing audiences with their unique blend of
gypsy jazz, originally made famous by jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt and
violinist Stephane Grappelli (1930’s & 1940’s). HCC is led by front man and harmonica player extraordinaire, Sandy
Weltman. The
band also features the amazing Gary
Hunt on
lead guitar along
with a driving rhythm section comprised of Clint
Hasse on guitar and Carl
Caspersen on double bass.
Clint’s rich baritone singing rounds out the swinging musical vibes from this
unique quartet. The
Hot Club Caravan repertoire is comprised of classic Django
arrangements, Django-ized pop tunes (Beatles etc..), along with some tasty
originals sprinkled into the mix.

RFT:
Best Lounge Act
Hugh "Peanuts" Whalum

As cool and smooth as the perfect martini, Hugh
"Peanuts" Whalum has provided sophisticated
musical entertainment for several generations of St.
Louisans, starting in Gaslight Square and continuing into
the present day. A fine tenor saxophonist as well as a
pianist and singer, Whalum somehow manages to be both
suave and down-home, charming audiences even as he
educates them in the finer points of jazz and the Great
American Songbook. Recently signed to the internationally
distributed Rendezvous Music label, Whalum is getting a
well-deserved late-career chance to reach a wider
audience. We can only hope his future success won't
preclude frequent appearances in the cozy confines of
local spots like Brandt's Red Carpet Lounge, where Whalum
has held forth most Thursdays for the past several years.
